Hart recently had a blog posting on this subject matter too. It really amazes me what the media considers important and valuable information for the masses to know. Although I don't think its completely the medias fault, what always draws in the most viewers? Sex scandals, celebrities being idiots, and other non-important issues. We have whole "news" broadcasts dedicated to this stuff like Access Hollywood and other gossip shows that draw in viewers but have little to no educational value. I think around junior year I decided not to watch the local evening news anymore because I realized I was not learning anything from it. Now think about the vast number of people who watch the local news every night and thats the only news they ever get. No wonder why everyone thinks American are so self-centered, the local news is all about things that only effect people in their area. I could rant more but that would turn this into an essay rather than a comment. So in conclusion, good points Brian.

Heres the thing, Globalization is awesome and amazing, however there is also a human aspect to it. Read the lyrics to Bruce Springsteen's "Youngstown," can those people become high tech workers of a global age? My point is this, we must embrace globalizaiton, but we must also reconize the costs. I think Tim Kaine did a good job of putting this aside of party lines, when he reconized the powers and advantages of globalization but also at the same time the costs. To see the quote, check out my blog. pprr.wordpress.com

Hi Brian `
Maybe I should introduce myself, now that I have commented on your work ;~0.

I am an econ prof at Elon down in North Carolina. While I am essentially a microeconomist, my reserach and areas of interest are in the history of econ thought, distributional ethics, and economic justice. For the "straight skinny" on me, ask Dr. Greenlaw!

Another direction you might consider is following the impact of the Grameen Bank. Since they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize a week or so ago there has been lots of attention paid to them. Perhaps some analysis on their impact might be interesting.

Or, if you are interested in MNC's, try tracing the behavior and impact of Nike. They have been the poster-child for what is wrong with globalization up until a few years ago. Now they have disappeared from the scene as an example of wrong-doing. What happened and how has it affected both Nike and the areas where they are located?

As I read your entries from the beginning of this blog I find you to be wrestling with some of the major issues of globalization; what is it? who are the players? how do MNC's fit in? how is it affecting US workers? These are HUGE questions and you simply cannot address them in-total in one paper.
Taking a cue from your bit on the auto industry, try thinking about how the situation of US auto workers is changing. Particularly, the big US manufacturers are laying off workers and moving work off shore. Meanwhile, the number of US automobile workers is not falling since the foreign companies with plants in the US are hiring US workers at about the same rate as they are being let go by the US firms. What is this doing to the standard of living of US auto workers?

You speak of examining globalism with an unbiased clean slate. This is well and good, however you don't need to know anything about globalism really. Simply look at the institutions promoting it and benefitting from it.The average American gets nothing from globalism just the reverse. The rich and influencial have profits galore. They are Americans Corporations but their outsourced manufacturing gets resold in America sans taxes. That's a sweet deal for Mr billionaire. For the American worker he can be consoled by getting his prescription cheaper at Wal Mart. Those who support globalism are just now beginning to feel the impact of globalism. In a few years only the pure capitalist will still profit and anyone who did something for a living , no matter how well educated will be replaced by three dollar an hout foreign labor.

[...] For the sake of argument I’ve decided to make a post in response to Brian’s post on how Starbucks is not globalization. First of all I agree with many of the points made by Brian so this is not taking the completely opposite view but maybe more of a middle ground. [...]

Yeah, I totally agree. The E.U. really is an economic organization, and highlights how regional organizations can add to the global economy. Look at what the E.U. through the WTO did to Microsoft. However, I would question wither or not the E.U. is actually an affective POLITICAL body, especially with limited support from Great Britian. The politics of the E.U. are not only limited, but when attempts have been made to increase the political power of the E.U. they have failed. (Note the rejection of the E.U. Constitution by France and Germany last year) Should be intresting to see how the lack of political sway, will aid/hurt the E.U. in the future.
